Relevant Research for alaskans

At UAA, actionable research on pressing issues like the impacts of climate change led by researchers in the College of Arts and Sciences directly affects and benefits Alaska, and the Alaskan way of life.

We provide essential information to policymakers. The Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER), one of several centers and institutes at UAA, is dedicated to supporting our state and its people’s well-being. ISER’s research is used to make critical policy decisions for Alaska’s economy, our education and health care systems, as well as our natural resources. ISER’s work benefits all Alaskans.

We develop products through our research that are solutions to challenges facing Alaskans. Rhizoform, LLC, a startup co-founded by two UAA professors, produces thermally insulating foams that are renewable, biodegradable and zero-waste for shipping Alaska seafood throughout the region and the world. Biodegradable insulation protects the environment essential to the fishing industry.

Essential forconservation

We seek answers to questions that effect Alaskans. From our Social Science and Humanities departments’ essential studies of our state’s cultures and economies to some of the world’s most comprehensive data on salmon collected at the Auke Creek Fish Weir, along with everything in between, UAS’s research is impacting and changing lives in Alaska.

Collaborative research is integral to our work at UAS; our industry and government partnerships are essential to pinpoint our research endeavors toward areas that directly impact Alaska.

One such area is Fisheries. We study changing environmental conditions, capture environmental DNA from ocean water, to guide and adapt salmon hatchery practices to further survival rates. We give our students opportunities for hands-on work that provides information essential to conservation and management practices and that serves to support the Alaskan Seafood industry for years to come.
